Understanding Internet Speed
Internet speed is measured in Mbps (megabits per second). But what do the numbers actually mean, and how much speed do you really need?
The Three Key Metrics
Download Speed
How fast data comes TO your device. This is what matters for streaming, browsing, and downloading files. Most ISPs advertise this number.
Upload Speed
How fast data goes FROM your device. Important for video calls, uploading files, streaming on Twitch/YouTube, and cloud backups. Usually much lower than download speed on cable/DSL connections.
Ping (Latency)
The time it takes for a small packet to travel to a server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). Critical for gaming, video calls, and real-time applications. Lower is better.
How Much Speed Do You Need?
| Activity | Download | Upload | Ping |
|---|---|---|---|
| Email and browsing | 5 Mbps | 1 Mbps | Any |
| HD streaming (1080p) | 10 Mbps | - | Any |
| 4K streaming | 25 Mbps | - | Any |
| Video calls (Zoom) | 5 Mbps | 5 Mbps | Under 150ms |
| Online gaming | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | Under 50ms |
| Remote work | 25 Mbps | 10 Mbps | Under 100ms |
| Streaming (Twitch) | 10 Mbps | 15+ Mbps | Under 100ms |
Why Your Speed May Be Lower Than Expected
- WiFi vs Ethernet: WiFi is always slower. Test with an Ethernet cable for true speeds
- Network congestion: Peak hours (7-11 PM) often show reduced speeds
- Distance from router: WiFi signal degrades with distance and walls
- Device limitations: Older devices may not support higher speeds
- ISP throttling: Some ISPs throttle specific services like streaming
Mbps vs MBps
A common confusion: Mbps (megabits) is not the same as MBps (megabytes). There are 8 bits in a byte, so 100 Mbps = 12.5 MBps. When you download a file at "12.5 MB/s", you're using your full 100 Mbps connection.
Test Your Speed Now
Check your actual internet speed right now with the PureTools Speed Test. It measures download speed, upload speed, and ping in seconds, right in your browser. No app installation needed.
