Brazil's Minimum Wage in 2026

Brazil's minimum wage (salario minimo) is one of the most important economic indicators in the country. It directly affects over 50 million Brazilians and serves as a reference for pensions, social benefits, and many private contracts.

YearValue (R$)Notable Event
1994R$64.79Plano Real introduced
2000R$151.00-
2010R$510.00Real gains above inflation

2025R$1,518.007.5% increase

How the Adjustment Works

Since 2024, Brazil uses a new formula for annual minimum wage adjustments:

  • Inflation (INPC): Ensures the wage keeps up with price increases
  • GDP growth: Previously, real GDP growth from two years prior was added. The new policy caps real gains at 2.5% above inflation
// Simplified adjustment formula
newWage = currentWage * (1 + INPC) * (1 + realGain)
// where realGain is capped at 2.5%

What the Minimum Wage Affects

  • INSS benefits: Minimum pensions and social security payments
  • BPC: Continuous Cash Benefit for elderly and disabled
  • Unemployment insurance: Minimum benefit floor
  • FGTS contributions: Based on salary (including minimum wage earners)
  • Tax brackets: Income tax exemption thresholds are often discussed in terms of minimum wages

Purchasing Power Over Time

Despite nominal increases, the real purchasing power of the minimum wage has fluctuated significantly. In 1940, when it was first introduced by President Getulio Vargas, it was designed to cover a worker's basic needs. Today, DIEESE estimates that an "ideal" minimum wage to cover basic expenses for a family of four would be approximately 5-6 times the actual value.
